Crate volume calculator Shipping emissions

Plan your cargo

Crate volume calculator.

Enter the external packed dimensions of your crates. Group identical crates together to calculate total cubic metres and indicative air-freight volumetric weight.

Volume = length × width × height × quantity, converted to metres. Volumetric weight = volume in cm³ ÷ the selected divisor. Indicative chargeable weight is the greater of total gross and total volumetric weight. Carrier rounding, minimum charges, non-stackability and per-piece rules can change billing. Confirm the divisor and tariff with your supplier. About air-freight chargeable weight.

Use packed physical gross weight for the carbon estimator, not volumetric billing weight. This volume tool does not assess container fit or cargo handling requirements.

Your shipment

Include crates and packaging. This weight applies to every leg. Use separate calculations if the cargo changes between venues.

Accounts for additional climate effects of flying using the published radiative-forcing factor. Applies only to air freight.

Method & assumptions

Transparent estimates.

Each leg is calculated as: packed weight in tonnes × entered distance in kilometres × emissions factor in kg CO₂e per tonne-km. Leg results are summed. Factors include freight operation emissions and upstream fuel production (well-to-tank).

UK road averages are used as international planning proxies, not country-specific factors. International air factors use the published non-UK category. The source air factors already incorporate their methodology’s distance uplift; no additional uplift is applied here.

This calculator excludes warehousing, terminals, installation, crate production, staff travel and any legs you do not enter. It does not account for carrier-specific fuels, refrigerated transport, empty dedicated vehicle movements or volume-based allocation. It is not a certified inventory, an ISO 14083/GLEC compliance report or a carbon-offset claim. For reporting, use verified carrier and shipment data. City estimates use approximate city-centre coordinates and great-circle distance (Haversine). The initial city list contains 45 major hubs. The estimate button fills the distance field with straight-line kilometres for every mode. For road and sea, replace this value with the actual route distance before calculating; no road or sea routing service is connected. Calculations stay in your browser.
